Need to encourage short films, documentaries in India: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi

Mumbai, April 11, 2015: Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Shri Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today said there is a need to encourage short films and documentaries in India as these films have been proved to be a medium to increase knowledge of the people on different issues and also giving effective cultural and social message.

Speaking at a function of Indian Infotainment Media Corporation (IIMC) at Mumbai, Shri Naqvi said India has a significant short films and documentaries making section of people which is quite effective and independent.

“But unfortunately, short films and documentaries have not received required encouragement in India even though there is a large number of talented writers and producers of short films and documentaries in the country who have immensely contributed in making world class short films and documentaries,’’ Shri Naqvi said.

Shri Naqvi expressed that short films and documentaries can become a strong custodian of social values, tradition and culture.

“There is a need to encourage short films and documentaries as these films can help in awakening consciousness of the people on issues such as social, economic, political, environmental, human rights, educational, health, women empowerment, gender equality, and challenges like poverty,’’ Shri Naqvi added.

Shri Naqvi said short films and documentary makers can contribute towards the society by raising issues concerned to the common man of the country.

Shri Naqvi further said short films and documentaries makers should also use the modern technology so message can be sent even in remote areas of the country.

Shri Naqvi also congratulated Mr Devendra Khandelwal, who has made a record of more than 100 short films and documentaries on social, cultural, economic, educational, agricultural issues. His record has been recognized at the global level.

“Some international channels- History, Environment, Geography, Animal Planet are making very good short films using latest technology, and these films have been proved to be an effective medium to increase knowledge of the people. Viewers of these programmes are more than those who watch any type of entertainment programme,’’ Shri Naqvi said.

Shri Naqvi added that entertainment and news channels in India should also keep slots for such short films.
